The Bay to Breakers is a popular footrace held in San Francisco, U.S.A. It's recognized as longest consecutively run footrace in the world as well as world's largest footrace. The complete course of Bay to Breakers footrace is 7.46 miles (12 kilometers) long. The most noticeable feature of this annual event is the fact of many participants engaging in varying degrees of public nudity. The event is observed every year on third Sunday in the month of May.

Major Attractions

Formerly known as Cross-City Race, the Bay to Breakers was started in the year 1912 as a way to lift the city's spirits after the disastrous 1906 San Francisco earthquake. The race starts at the northeast end of the downtown area and runs west through the city to finish at the Great Highway where breakers crash onto Ocean Beach at Pacific coast. Participants dress in elaborate costumes or,sometimes wear nothing at all. Another highlight of this festival is the tortilla toss. It's a festive tradition during which runners throw tortillas at one another. Other attractions of his footrace include traditional characters such as Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, Spider-Man as well as other unique characters spawned for the race. A group of much-beloved "salmon" participants stagger upstream through the race by donning their elaborated full-body costumes. Local bands also perform alongside the entire route in addition to a "Footstock" at the end of the race. This gatheres participants and spectators to enjoy musical performances by various musical acts. Another notifying aspect of Bay to Breakers is the "Bandits" who are known for the large number of unregistered runners.
