The festival of San Fermin is celebrated in the city of Pamplona (Navarre, Spain). It's popularly known as running of the bulls. Men pit themselves against mad bulls in a frantic dash for their lives. The famous bullrun is of course, the top tourist draw in Pamplona but it comprises just one element of a very sacred event. The festival of San Fermin is held in early July and commemorates the patron saint of Pamplona.
San Fermin is actually a folk festival of Spain which starts with a a huge fiesta involving the entire town and thousands of tourists. There are plenty of traditional folkloric events to enjoy followed by the big run at the conclusion. The celebrationskick off annually from 12:00, 6 July, by setting off the pyrotechnic chupinazo. Since then, this gala continues till midnight 14 July, when it concludes with the singing of the Pobre de M. The most famous event of an Fermin festival is "encierro" or the running of the bulls. The biggest day is 7 July, when thousands of people accompany a replica of the statue of Saint Fermin along the streets in the old part of Pamplona. San Fermin is accompanied by dancers and street entertainers, such as the Gigantes and the Cabezudos (the Bigheads). The week-long celebration involves many other traditional and folkloric events. It is known locally as Sanfermines and is held in honor of Saint Fermin, the co-patron of Navarre.
