The Calgary Stampede is a ten day long festival held annually in Calgary, Alberta " Canada. Holding recognition as The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth, Calgary Stampade is held in the month of July every year. The main events of this festival include parade, midway, stage shows, concerts, agricultural competitions, chuckwagon racing and First Nations exhibitions. The main highlight of Canada's Calgary Stampade is the world's largest rodeo.
The Calgary Stampede is actually an annual rodeo, exhibition and festival in which the locals and visitor are encouraged to "dress western" all through the festive period. The festival of Calgary Stampede focuses on celebrating the agriculture, farming life and life of a rodeo. The festival brings along a party atmosphere during Stampede and events are held across the city including ever popular pancake breakfasts and barbecues. The Calgary Stampede traces its roots to 1886 when the Calgary and District Agricultural Society held its first fair. In 1912, American promoter Guy Weadick launched the first rodeo. A merger with the Calgary Industrial Exhibition in 1923 led to the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede which is observed till date. The Calgary Stampede is referred amongst the richest rodeos in the world with prizes over 2 million dollars. However certain vents like calf roping, having risk of injury or death to horses and calves has led to calls by animal welfare groups to ban the event or rodeo as a whole. Inspite of all these facts, the Calgary Stampede remains a popular event attracting top competitors from across North America.
