The festival of Hermanus Whale Watching is held annually during the month of September. It's that time in the year when the Southern Right whales come into the local bay during the mating season. To welcome the first whales, a "Kalfiefees" or Calf Festival is organized in the month of August. Both festivals are characterized by food and craft stalls and also attract South African drama productions to the town.
