Iceland Airwaves is a much awaited music festival held in Reykjavik, Iceland. It's organized every year on the third weekend of October. The celebrations of music at Iceland Airwaves lasts for five days spanning from Wednesday to Sunday. The main attraction of Iceland Airwaves music festival is its prime focus in showcasing new music, both Icelandic and international.
The Iceland Airwaves music festival is one of the most youngest festivals in the world. It traces its origin back in the year 1999, when the first show was held as a one off event in an airplane hangar at Reykjavik Airport. Eventually, it has evolved as one of the premier showcases for new music in the world with hundreds of journalists and industry people in attendance. Airwaves music gala is known for its intimacy and party spirit. The festival has been called the hippest long weekend on the annual music-festival calendar and an unbelievable zest for music and celebration by some renowned people like Jonah Flicker. Artists who have performed at Iceland Airwaves include the likes of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, The Bravery, The Rapture, Crystal Castles, Thievery Corporation, Sparta, Flaming Lips, Fatboy Slim, The Kills, TV on the Radio, Keane, Hot Chip, Ratatat, Architecture in Helsinki, Klaxons, Wolf Parade, Kaiser Chiefs and local bands Sigur Ros, GusGus, mom, Singapore Sling, FM Belfast Ultra Mega Technobandis Stefan and Retro Stefson. The Iceland Airwaves is promoted and produced by Mr. Destiny Ltd sponsored by Icelandair, in cooperation with Reykjavik City. As of 2010, the festival is managed by Iceland Music Export.
