The International Jazz Festival is held annually in Montreal, Canada, during the summer season. The electric atmosphere and diversity of shows attract large number of fans all over the world. Shows are held in a wide variety of venues, from relatively small jazz clubs to the large halls of Place des Arts. Some of the outdoor shows are held on cordoned-off streets while others are on terraced parks. Typically there are well over 500 concerts offered during the span of 10 days, from noon to midnight, about 350 of which are outdoors and free to the public.
Montreal has a legendary past history of jazz. The appreciation goes way back in memory lanes to the days of segregation in the United States when many artists would venture north to the city to play. Since then, for over twenty years now, Montreal has hosted the best jazz festival in the world. The International Jazz Festival is also the biggest in terms of artist and audience participation. Many parts of the city's downtown core are closed to traffic for ten days as outdoor shows are free to the public and on many stages at the same time, from noon till midnight. Montreal"s beautiful downtown core is transformed into a hotbed of jazz, with stages dotting many major intersections. The streets are turned into pedestrian walkways and artists from around the world play in front of massive crowds.
