The Midnight Sun Film Festival is a prestigious film festival held in Sodankyla, Finland. Held every year in the month of June, the Midnight Sun Film Festival is a non-competitive event. The most unique feature of this festival is that it shows films without a break all day and night long, while the sun keeps on shining. The Midnight Sun Film Festival consists mostly from the films of the main guests as well as modern movies from all parts of the world.
The films included in the festival are from the films of the main guests, 20"30 modern movies from all parts of the world, contemporary Finnish films and cinema classics, some of which are usually presented as "master classes" by various film theory experts. The festival also plays a vital role in nurturing new talent by introducing 4"5 directors from younger generation who are also guests at the festival. There are also discussions, where the informal attitude prevails and famous directors are quizzed on their desert island film selection for example and a festival competition. The movie extravaganza in Finland traces its origin in the year 1986 and the first international director guests were Samuel Fuller, Jonathan Demme, Bertrand Tavernier and Jean-Pierre Gorin. Besides these eminent personalities, other big names in cinema, such as Jim Jarmusch, Krzysztof Kieslowski, Roger Corman, Terry Gilliam, Francis Ford Coppola, Abbas Kiarostami and Milos Forman also graced the first edition.
