The Pasifika Festival is a much awaited festival celebrated in Auckland City, New Zealand. Popularly called as 'Pasifika', the Pasifika Festival is based on the theme of Pacific Islands " the exact geographical location of Auckland. This festival is held every year with great enthusiasm and zeal. An important fact related to this festival is that it's the the Pasifika Festival is the largest festival of its type in the world, recording an attendance of over 225,000 visitors every year.
The Pasifika Festival was started in the year 1993 with focus to bring the traditional aspects of Pacific Islands on the forefront. The festival presents a wide variety of cultural experiences, including traditional cuisine and performances from Samoa, Tonga, Cook Islands, Fiji, Niue, Tahiti, Tokelau, Tuvalu, Kiribati and the Tangata Whenua (New Zealand Maori). The Pasifika Festival is actually a celebration of New Zealand"s Pacific heritage presenting a grand showcase of traditional music, dance, crafts and culture of the Pacific Islands. The jubilant visitors who turn out for the event are entertained with traditional performances, craft workshops etc. Besides this, over 150 food stalls serving a variety of traditional Pacific island dishes make this festival a delectable event. The main highlight of this festival is the opening night concert where the best acts of the festival are performed. The Pasifika Festival is split up into "Villages" created by individual island communities representing nine islands, where the culture of that island is showcased.
