The 75-acre festival grounds include the 23,000 seat Marcus Amphitheater, along with 10 other stage areas and state of the art facilities. Summerfest is a festival where fun never ends. The Summerfest music festival traces its origin back in 1960's when the that time reigning mayor Henry W. Maier decided to start a large-scale summer festival alike to that of Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany. Around 1965, panel of business and civic leaders drew up a proposal for a 10-day multi-event festival with the proposed name of "Milwaukee World Festival," which was changed briefly in 1966 to "Juli Spab" (German for "July Fun") and then to "Summerfest".
