Womad music festival is dedicated to cross-cultural education, the expansion of musical and inter-racial understanding and the elimination of racism.
The term WOMAD stands for World of Music, Arts and Dance. It's a registered charity organization which was founded in 1980 by Peter Gabriel, Thomas Brooman, and Bob Hooton. The first WOMAD festival took place in 1982 at Shepton Mallet, England. The festival then spread to over 20 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, Japan, UK, U.S. and many European countries. The highlights of a Womad festival include varied live musical performances, workshops, stalls and events for children. The festival has been a platform to launch, boost or revive the careers of many world music artists, including the likes of late Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, Master Drummers of Burundi, Afro Celt Sound System etc. The festival has been termed as "nomadic" by WOMAD foundation, as the idea has spread its wings as a global gala. The Womad festival all over the world has been serving dual purposes by providing a musical treat on one side as well as helping to achieve international cooperation with vibrancy and enthusiasm of music.
